Mahogany Cased “Coffin” Wall Clock, attributed to Simon Willard, Roxbury, circa 1800, the full length door with glass over the 5 3/4 in. diameter engraved silvered brass dial with Roman hour numerals, closed minute track, Arabic minute numerals, two subsidiary dials, one engraved Strike-Silent and the other a “seconds” dial and blued steel hands, eight day weight driven, step train movement with side mounted pendulum and dead-beat escapement, (crest now gone; imperfections), ht. 26 1/2 in.

A related movement is found in a Simon Willard wall clock, Zea and Cheney, Clock Making in New England, 1725-1825, page 30;

Provenance: By descent in the Dudley family of Roxbury.

Condition report

Condition: Case: crest on top of case now gone; old holes on right and left sides of top suggest small brass finials; old surface; minor re-gluing and repairs; mahogany “pad” which supports the movement in the case appears to be original

Movement/Dial: evidence suggests a “fall off” strike sounding once on the hour; bell and “strike-silent” mechanism now gone; one pulley is a replacement; hour hand is a replacement; strike-silent and second’s hand now gone; dial with old if not original silvering; numerous cleaning notations and dates on back of rear plate by E. Taber; lead weight appears to have been used as a clock maker’s staking block; unusual dead-beat escapement and pendulum are original
