In the mid-iSoos, manufacturers began decorating clock cases with mother-of-pearl (pieces of the iridescent inner layer of certain mollusk shells) to create an Oriental look. The colorful pearly fragments were embedded in a layer of papier mache, a mixture of mashed paper and glue.
