Louis XVI Gilt-Bronze and Marble Mantel Clock
Merra a Paris, late 18th century
Having a white enamel black Roman and Arabic numeral dial, the hands and door frame fitted with round brilliant crystals, the two-train movement with outside count wheel and flat bottom plate enclosed within a drum-shaped case flanked and surmounted by military trophies, raised on a base in the form of a stage depicting an operatic scene from Sedaine’s comic opera Au Deserteur, ending in a conforming base and circular feet. Height 22 inches (56 cm), width 13 1/4 inches (33.5 cm).
