Sumptuous French Gilt-Bronze and Carved Carrara Marble Mantel Clock, ca. 1900, supported by two recumbent lions, the case proper flanked by a pair of putti with white marble vases and surmounted by a large gilt-bronze group of two Bacchantes in the manner of Mathurin Moreau (French, 1822-1912), the later circular dial signed “Hamilton/Sangamo”, h. 33-1/2″, w. 40″, d. 11″.

Condition report

Spectacular lot in overall good condition. Quoting the consignor, this clock and Lot 2, the pair of candelabra en suite, were purchased in the early 1970s, by the consignor, at an estate sale at Ashland, the home of Henry Clay, near Lexington, Kentucky. It was professionally cleaned after the purchase, per the consignor. Now with scattered minor oxidation. Rich detail, crisply modeled and chased. The floral swags now attached at each end with wire, the lower swag with a professionally restored break (see catalogue/Web photo). The marble with two old, very small hairline cracks to the upper rear section and scattered nicks, dings and scuffs–all consistent with age. The later electrically-wired works lacking a bell. A key and pendulum present. The flat rear glass and convex front glass intact.
