Massive oak elaborately carved figural tall case clock. 11′ 10″ h x 50″ w x 35″ d. Base with pair of 32″ carved putti, central figural medallion of Sir William Whittington, and date of 1793, supporting a waist door with a 4′ figural carving of young Dick Whittington flanked by carvings of cat and mice, Father Time, Lady Justice. Wall panels of musical instruments including violins, horns and cello. Surmounted with a figural carved bonnet flanked with twin putti and carved pediment bust of Sir Richard Whittington. Encasing an eight day moon phase dial, calendar, day and date dials, 2 chime selection and 7 musical tunes, nest of 12 bells and nest of 8, coil spring chime. Signed on face plate Joshua Hampson fecit 1743 inscribed “Turn again Whittington Thrice Lord Mayor of London”. Provenance: Elkins Family, Elkins Park, PA.
