Gilt Presentation Banjo Clock, ca 1830, replaced painted tin dial with Arabic numerals signed Aaron Willard/Boston, 8-day presentation banjo, with restorations. The throat tablet is original, and has gilt scroll work at top with crossed flags above field cannon with stacked shells, eagle surmount with ribbon banner in beak on white ground, the lower tablet is an old replacement with naval battle of U.S.S. Constitution vs. H.M.S. Guerriere. The wood case has applied corner blocks at corners of waist and door with roped moulding between, brass scroll brackets mounted at sides of waist, bottom with classic tapered fluted drop with acorn terminal and row of applied balls under box. The movement is original 8-day time-only brass weight driven and held in with two screws, and not made by Aaron Willard, 4.25″ deep x 10.25″ wide x 40″ high.
Condition report
This case has been refinished and the gold leaf covered over with gold paint, dial is a period Willard piece but not original to this clock, the brass finial is a period replacement, the weight baffle in the bottom of the case is a replacement. minor losses to the gesso and 2 of the ball ornaments are missing, bottom replacement.
